Portland City Bureau Heads Submit Slashed Budgets

Charlie Hales
In an effort to get out of a $25 million dollar city budget hole, Mayor Charlie Hales has asked the head of each of the city's bureau's to come up with a budget proposal that is 10% below last year's.
Those proposals were turned in Wednesday. As far as Fire and Rescue, the proposed cuts would mean the closure of 7 of 30 stations or companies which equals 91 firefighter positions. The Portland Police Department would cut 127 of 998 positions; 29 would be unfilled spots that would stay that way while 98 officers would be laid off. Portland's downtown mounted patrols would also be on the cutting block.
The City Council will and the Mayor will be evaluating all of the proposals.
