Parents spent over an hour trying to change the mind of Portland Public School Superintendent Carole Smith. She says the problem lies in the fact that only half of the students living in the Jefferson neighborhood go to schools in the Jefferson cluster. And that combined with budget issues, has her recommending to shut down Chief Joseph Elementary and send those students to Ockley Green School, an under performing K-8 magnet school. The only issue is when. The district will not give a definitive timeline, and that has parents UPSET...

"We feel like theirs a huge lack of information, our questions are unanswered and it's hard where to go from here" a parent of a Chief Joseph student told our news partner KGW. It even brought concern amongst the school board members.

"Does this actually get to the issues we're facing in the Jefferson cluster or is it going to exasperate those issues? And I don't know the answer to that and I'm really hesitant to move forward on something I'm not really sure about," said school board member Matt Morton.

The question now remains, what next. Well, two more meetings are going to be held this month where the district will here public comment. Then they will make a final vote.
