President Obama’s defense secretary rolls out new political correctness for the United States Military today. Women in combat.  Yesterday, when the news first broke, I got an earful from current service members and veterans. A few liked it.  But most of them pointed out the practical problems.  Women serve in the military right now but the physical standards are set much lower than for men.  That’s not a huge problem if the woman serves in some jobs. But the men point out that a fully loaded combat infantry soldier can tip the scales at 300 pounds.  They question if an average sized woman, similarly loaded up, can drag a wounded brother to safety, or climb over a wall.  and these aren’t the objections of grizzled old Vietnam or world war two vets.  it’s the younger guys who have respect for the women they serve with…but say that only women of extraordinary physical fitness can meet the minimums set for men.   While the women’s rights advocates are celebrating today, I would only ask them…is it a victory if you win new opportunities for women…only by setting telling those women they don’t have to actually show they’re equal in ability?
