A Tax That I Actually Might Like..?

I think I've finally found a tax I might like.  Gasoline, Diesel and weight mile taxes fund Oregon’s road system.  But cars get much better mileage these days than they used to.  The cars that drove the most miles paid the greatest taxes. Heavy vehicles usually paid more than light ones.  But battery cars don’t pay any gasoline taxes at all.  The state wants a vehicle miles tax.  The more you drive the more you pay.   My biggest fear is that the state will make this too complicated.  Some big government types will want to put a GPS tracker in every car.  It’s expensive, prone to failure and it invites charging not just for miles driven but where you drive and when you drive…more for rush hour for instance or more for congested areas.  Let’s not reinvent the wheel. So I have an alternative.  Most people know roughly the miles they drive every year.  Pay the tax on your estimated miles and make up the difference when you renew.  It’s simple and it charges all taxpayers on their use of public roads.
