When I'm in Charge
The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering classes to help kids achieve some independence. The class is called "When I'm in Charge" and is geared towards 8-11 year olds. Scott Linstrom teaches the class. He says he teaches kids how to answer the door and phone politely without revealing that the parents aren't home. He also teaches kids how to keep themselves and their siblings safe.
Linstrom says kids are usually excited to take the class and play games with each other. The classes are offered year round but there are more during this time of year, not only because more kids are home alone over winter break, but because kids need something to do over winter break.
