The University of Miami football team didn't always have a winning tradition and wasn't always referred to as "The U". Howard Schnellenberger built Miami into the respected football program it is today. Schnellenberger joined John Canzano on The Bald Faced Truth to talk football and life.

Winning a National Championship with Miami was not only beneficial to the football program but also the community in South Florida. Schnellenberger talked about how the community saw those benefits.

"That terrible football team we started with rose to the levels of champions and helped reinforced the values of Miami and Dade County was a pretty dog gone good place to live and it was good place for kids to grow up and attain things nobody thought was possible."

A tragic shooting occurred yesterday in Portland, OR at Clackamas Town Center Mall that left 3 people dead and a city in mourning. Howard Schnellenberger talked about dealing with tragedy.

"You have to develop a philosophy and a way of life that there's going to be tragic things that happen around you when you least expect it. You have to have a built in gyroscope I guess it is that keeps you on the straight and narrow or keeps you balanced during those times. It has to be rooted in your faith, it has to be rooted in your family and your family values and all those things that we pride ourselves in and even with all that said it's still a difficult thing to do."

Howard and John also discuss the mentor's that helped shape one of football's greatest coach's.
