What's the Punishment for This Crime?

What can you possibly do with two pint sized criminals who at ages 7 and 11 try to jack a car and commit armed robbery armed with a loaded gun?  Obviously the facts aren't all in yet.  Where they got the gun.  Were their parents even aware of what they were up to?  But the legal system seems stymied by the pair.  Can’t send them to juvenile hall although we might have to reconsider that rule.  Can’t shame them because even though I’m sure by now all their classmates at school know or will know soon who they are…the rest of the community will not.  Some will call for punishment of their parents and I wouldn't leave that off the list.  They threatened to take a life and had the means to do it. My disappointment: the courts will treat them as “victims” and that message won’t be lost on the kids.  Their privacy will be protected.  If kids saw that when you commit a crime the adults treat you with kid gloves…pun intended.  A night in lockup might have been the best thing for them.  Shaming from society is another. And don’t necessarily assume the parents are at fault.  We all know virtually perfect parents with offspring from hell…and well behaved kids who set a good example for how their parents should behave. Time to bring back the stocks in the public square.
