Geno Toretta is one of only a select few number of people who have won the Maxwell Awawrd, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the Davey O’Brien Award and the Heisman trophy all in the same season. In addition to that plethora, he was also a member of two National Title winning teams as a member of the Miami Hurricaines. He joined Chad on Flight 750 Friday to talk about his great college career and to give his insight on some of the big stories in the NFL and college football this season.
Torretta admits that even though Miami was stacked with talent on its football team, it was not something that was unique to “The U”.
“Between us, Florida State and Florida, there was a stretch where it seemed like for a decade or 15 years, one of those three schools won a national title.”
Toretta also weighed in on one of the greatest college and NFL quarterbacks in history, Peyton Manning, and his play after being out of the NFL for nearly two seasons.
“I didn’t think he’d come back unless he thought he could play at the level of before his injury…And in watching Denver last year and knowing Coach Fox and seeing how good their defense was, I was like, ‘Wow, these guys might be able to put it together with him’.”
And finally, Toretta spoke to the great season that Mike Riley and the Oregon State Beavers have put together down in Corvallis.
“I love Coach Riley. I think he’s one of the best coaches, he’s a great person, and as a player, he’s a guy you want to play for…It’s amazing when you have that kind of turnaround and you have the success that he did this year. But I think that happens when you have a couple guys step up big.”
