Drive a stake through the heart of the Columbia River Crossing light rail bridge.  This nearly four billion dollar boondoggle has been a disaster all along.  And it has cost taxpayers nearly 150-million bucks without a single shovel of dirt turned. But now voters in Clark County have said no…just as they did a decade ago.  Voters in Clackamas county have sent a strong “no” in their votes this week and in September.

The Oregon and Washington legislatures still have not budgeted the nearly one billion the project will cost them.  The federal government has to pitch in a billion and they’re not exactly flush.  And tolling that was supposed to produce 1.3 billion of the cost won’t…according to a solid source like the state treasurer Ted Wheeler.  And documents from the project say tolls can go as high as eight bucks per trip. Now Congressman Jaime Herrera Beutler and state Senator Don Benton and seven others have signed a letter demanding they scrap the current design…and light rail…and essentially start over.

It’s about time!
