Portland Teachers Race To Unaccountability
Oregon schools are a mess and I put most of the
blame on unions that fight efforts to improve them. Of course, the unions are happy to tell you
that if we only paid their members more money, they’d miraculously turn into
better teachers.
If you want proof about
the union’s complicity in a school system where a third of the students drop
out and only half of those who stay behind make the minimum marks, check
today’s news.
The federal government has
offered up 400-million dollars in the “race to the top” competition. But to play the game you have to get your
teacher union to agree that its members be evaluated by something
extraordinary…student test scores. I
know, the rest of us out here in the real world get measured by the results we
produce. But apparently teachers unions
think that judging the work of teachers by student success is unfair. So the union refuses to play ball. And now
the Portland Public Schools have announced they will give up their “Race to the
Top”.
It’s time to get unions to come
back to planet earth and start thinking about the kids.
If not, it’s time to kick the unions out of
public employment.
