Beavers Better Believe in Backup

It was a tough day for the Beavers and their followers Monday as they learned that Sean Mannion must have knee surgery and he will be sidelined for an undisclosed period of time. Kerry Eggers, the Dean of Portland Sports, joined Chad on Flight 750 Monday to break down the Mannion injury and what it means for the Beavers.
Eggers states that when Mannion underwent an MRI early Monday morning it was discovered that he had a torn meniscus in his left knee. Eggers believes that Mannion tore the ligament on a noncontact running play Saturday.“Evidently it’s a torn meniscus. He didn’t really feel it until it swelled up
on Sunday morning. They’ve done an MRI
and I’m going to guess the surgery is tomorrow."
Eggers suggests that those close to the Beavers program don’t believe the injury is that serious and that Mannion will be back on the field in a few weeks. However, he maintains that the MRI only showed a torn meniscus and it will not be known until the surgery takes place just how serious the injury is.
“I’m hearing that it’s one of two things. If it’s just a meniscus, the prognosis is he could return in four weeks. If they get in there and find it’s more than that, it could be a season-ending injury. So there is the possibility that Sean Mannion could be lost for the season.”
The injury to Mannion means that redshirt junior Cody Vaz is going to be taking the snaps and leading the team in his absence. Although he has been with the program for a few years, Vaz has no valuable experience during that time.
“Cody Vaz has not played a football game since the last game of his senior year of high school in Stockton, California.”
With the way the Beavers have been locking teams down on defense, they may be able to weather the storm in Mannion’s absence. But this is definitely an unfortunate position for an offense that was really starting to find itself and a team that was coming in as hot as anyone in the country.
