Lewis and Clark Bridge over the Columbia River

A construction worker is presumed drowned in the Columbia River in Longview after falling from the Lewis and Clark Bridge on Sunday.  He's been identified as 40-year-old Charles "Bill" Wiley Junior of Mississippi.  He was working for Odyssey-Geronimo JV.

Co-workers say Wiley was working on a platform under the bridge.  They saw him fall from the middle of the span.  His co-workers describe him as very safety conscious and experienced.  Investigators are looking into how and why the safety equipment he was wearing did not stop his fall.

The Coast Guard searched for several hours before suspending their efforts due to the conditions of the water.  Only a hard hat was found.
