Vancouver Douses Fireworks

The Vancouver City Council listened to endless hours of testimony for month after month on the topic of fireworks. One council member said "We have held more meetings on the issue of fireworks then they have the most important thing they do, the budget". Members of the Elks Lodge showed up by the dozens to show support against the proposed regulations. They told the council that they made over $30,000 a year that they put directly back into the community, specifically the parks, and youth sports. But despite that argument, the council sided with those who say the effects on animals, and those with PTSD outweigh the holiday festivities. In 2014 those living in Vancouver (not all of Clark County) will have three days instead of seven days to buy fireworks around Independence Day. Folks will also have to set their fireworks off on one day (July 4th), as opposed to the three previously allowed. The vote was unanimous. Mondays public hearing lasted hours, and 30 citizens testified. Earlier this year the council considered a similar ordinance, limiting the type of fireworks that can be used, called "Safe and Sane".
