The Penn State Scandal Results Should Look Familiar to Oregonians

I spent part of the morning reading the report on the late Joe Paterno, and the way Penn State officials covered up Jerry Sandusky’s crimes for ten years.

I found it strangely familiar, because in recent decades we’ve seen the same things happen in Oregon.

- A former mayor of Portland identified the man who raped a child for years yet many kept Neil Goldschmidt’s secret and too many still associate with him today.

- Congressman David Wu had unresolved allegations of a sexual crime against him and yet he was re elected year after year till his behavior became too public.

- Mayor Sam Adams, identified as a pursuer of teenage boys by his political opponent Bob Ball. The Portland community chose to villifile ball, elect Adams, and even after a less than the full story mea culpa from Adams, refused twice to recall him from office.

Nike founder Phil Knight, who eulogized Paterno as having done no wrong, will surely amend his comments today, but the silence and coverup at Penn State should look very familiar to Oregonians
