I received an email from a concerned parent in the Beaverton School District. She said that she was worried that, now that the district has cut technology and art teachers in elementary schools, that music will be next.

While I support children broadening their horizons by taking part in thing like music and art, I'm left with the following question: is it really the job of the schools to provide classes in things like music, art, and physical education?

The reality is, that parents of kids who want their children involved in these types of activities, should pay for them to be involved. Want your kid to play the piano? Pay for lessons. Want your child involved in physical activities? Sign them up for after school sports. If a group of parents want their kids in a choir class at school, cover the cost of the teacher.

The simple fact is that it is easier and more economical for parents to do these things for their children through the private sector, then for school districts to provide it.
