Food for Thought

A four day, mega food drive is coming to Portland April 18th.  I just had the pleasure of interviewing Cheryl and Ed Tonkin, cousins and co-chairs of the Food for Thought Festival.  Both are quite passionate about bringing awareness to hunger in Oregon.  The Oregon Food Bank has distributed more than 1,000,000 emergency food boxes for the last two years.  Those boxes feed 270,000 people each month, 92,000 of them children.  Food for Thought was Cheryl's idea, and she's making it happen with help from the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland.  There are four days of events and something for everybody.  There are lectures, comedy shows, workshops and author talks.  Some events are free while others require tickets.  Even some local attractions are offering discounted admission with canned food.  It sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun.  You can find out more information on their website, and listen to my interview with Cheryl and Ed Tonkin on this Sunday's Beyond the Headlines.

March Madness Still Going Strong

Are you participating in March Madness?  How does your bracket look after the weekend?  I am surprised that I am still doing pretty well, ranked 9th in the Alpha office pool.  Some of my co-workers are still depressed over the weekend upsets (Gonzaga fans I'm talking to you) but life goes on right?  I'm sure 99% of people picked Georgetown over Florida Gulf Coast, which means our brackets are blown, but isn't it nice to see the underdog win?  How far do you think they can go?  And how about those Ducks, do you think they'll advance past the Sweet 16?  Some of you are probably thinking, "who cares?" but everyone needs a hobby, right?  A little distraction is a good thing.  Good luck!--Lacey

Spring Has Sprung!

It seems this time of year, it's all about the sunshine getaway. We're done with the rain and just need to feel a little warmth. Here in the Northwest that could mean Los Angeles, Palm Springs, maybe even Southern Oregon. A trip to the Oregon coast is always nice, albeit not warm. Travel Insider put together some of the popular places for college students across the country:

-San Diego, California

- Scottsdale, Arizona

- Panama City, Florida

- Miami, Florida

- Orlando, Florida

- Las Vegas, Nevada

- South Padre Island, Texas

As for travel trends, road trips are more popular than ever because they are more affordable. All inclusive packages are also popular because young people can budget the trip a little better....but it's best to read the fine print so you wont be taken by scammers. As for me? It's a short trip to California to see family and friends. That always recharges me in the spring. Whatever you do, enjoy!

Oregon is 4th Highest in US for Melanoma Death Rate

It always peaks my interest when I hear that Oregon is tops in the nation at something -- per capita micro-breweries, college football, etc -- but, I was dismayed to hear that such a health conscious state could lead the nation in melanoma death rates for women. Overall, the state has the 4th highest melanoma death rate in the nation.
