The challenge of testing new Alzheimer’s drugs - The OHSU effect


The best way to fix Alzheimer’s is to prevent it before it starts, but how do you test medication for that? On OHSU’s On the Brain blog, Joseph Quinn, M.D., says it’s difficult because researchers would need to study many participants over many years to see whether the drug had any effect compared to a controlled study group given a placebo.

Alzheimer’s researchers are dealing with the problem by identifying people who are at high-risk for Alzheimer’s and using only them in studies. That may show us more quickly if a drug is working. Find out more about the OHSU effect and working to prevent Alzheimer’s on their On the Brain blog.

It Is ON Lars......Let the Battle Begin......A Battle For A Good Cause.


I was really impressed with how the whole Salvation Army Red Kettle Fundraiser got started. It began in San Francisco in 1891 when a Salvation Army Captain wanted to raise money to feed a big meal to hungry people in his city. He remembered his days as a sailor in England when they used a big kettle to collect money. So, he brought that to the states. Since then, the red kettle campaign has spread around the globe. Now, new technology is available with a click of the mouse. If you donate at the onlineredkettle.org/rebecca, you can help this agency do the good work they set out to do on that day so long ago. You can also help me have a little bragging rights over Lars which is always kind of fun.

You are helping The Salvation Army continue to feed the hungry, provide after school programs to kids, help the elderly with medical care, and help out in times of disaster.

Consent Form Improves Emergency Care for Kids - The OHSU Effect


Winter break is almost upon us which means your children will likely be spending more time with a babysitter or at day care. A role for OHSU in reducing the cost of health care - The OHSU Effect


Healthcare costs are on the forefront of everyone’s minds and at the core of long-term debt questions for both the federal and state’s budgets.  Health care economist John McConnell writes on OHSU’s blog that we’re currently in the “dark ages” when it comes to knowing what works in containing costs in the health care system.  Recently, his team was awarded $5 million in grants and gifts to begin to give us information that could have significant impacts on the future of health care in Oregon.  Read more on OHSU’s 96k blog.

Are you excited about The Hobbit?


The latest Peter Jackson film opens next week and people are getting really excited.  Not only because The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be a great story and tribute to Tolkien, but because it's filmed at 48 frames per second.  Don't know what that is?  I didn't either.  Currently, movies are shot at 24 frames per second.  So this new format is double that.  Rudyard Coltman, the owner of Cinetopia, tells me the format is a lot more clear and lifelike.  He used an example of a demonstration he saw once of a horse running.  He says in 24 frames per second, the horse's mane and tail just looked like a blob.  But in 48 frames per second, he says you can see every single hair follicle.  He eventually expects all movies to be filmed in this manner.
Coltman says moviegoers will be able to notice the difference.  KXL's Chris Brown is going to a preview of the movie next week, which will be shown in 48 frames per second.  He is excited about it and will tell us about the difference afterwards.  Are you excited about this new format?  Will you go to a midnight showing?--Lacey

Nina? Nina's Not Here.


 

When forecasters met last month, they said they didn't expect this to be a La Nina year.  They're right.  The ocean temperatures are normal this year unlike in a La Nina year, but so far, it's been raining like Nina is here.  According to The Columbian Weather Blogger and the National Weather Service,  6.15 inches of rain have fallen in October and 8.25 inches of rain in November.  That's nearly 15 inches so far this season.  We've reached a water surplus for the year and it's only early December and that means the potential for a lot of flooding.  These storms are coming from the south and are relatively warm....but long range models show we may see some really cold temperatures next week.  Can you say "snow"?
