Lars got his start in radio at age 16 spinning records (remember 45s?) and reading news, sports and weather (twice an hour) on KTIL (The Mighty 1590) from a little cinderblock building on the edge of a cow pasture in Tillamook, Oregon (75 miles West of Portland, Oregon).
36 years later, he’s only moved 75 miles east to Portland and light years to “the Right”. Emmy and Peabody award winner Lars Larson brings nearly four decades of experience as a radio and television journalist to the microphone for six hours of the best talk radio in America. Six hours of daily prep keep The Lars Larson Show on top of the news and top-of-mind for listeners across the country.
Along the way, Lars has worked for more than a dozen radio stations and five television stations. Today, Lars holds down the fort from 12pm – 4pm on Radio Northwest flagship FM NEWS 101 KXL. His local talk show airs on seventeen stations in the Pacific Northwest (and earns him the biggest local talk radio audience in the region).

Bicycles should not be immune from the rules of the roadA woman was killed as a result of an accident with a truck last night. The truck was turning right onto a one way street, and the biker was heading straight through the intersection. Now, according to the city, bicycles have the right of way on our downtown streets. This would seem to be out of sorts. How is it that a bicycle that travels in the same lane as a car or truck, should take precedent over that car or truck. This is another prime example of Mayor Sam Adams having the city's priorities out of whack. Commercial trucks have huge blind spots, and when making a right turn the driver cannot see anything in that area. Trucks even have signs on the back of their trailers saying "If you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you." The city won't admit it, but they've designed downtown Portland for collisions. I, for one, think it's sad that the city is putting their agenda ahead of the safety of their citizens. Portland needs to return to the land of common sense, and start requiring bicyclists who choose to risk their lives by riding in the streets, to follow the same rules as the automobiles that drive on them.

Should citizens be charged for misusing public services? Here's an excerpt from KTXL in Sacramento: Sacramento firefighters presented the City Council with a study Tuesday that suggests ways to prevent cuts, including imposing fees. Some fees proposed are for false alarms, for drug or alcohol-related car accidents, rescuing someone who was violated the law (like trespassing) and a lockout fee, for responding to unlock homes or vehicles for people. Firefighters also suggest a $100 fee for riding in a fire department ambulance. Public services are cutting the fat left and right, and in some cases that includes personnel. These public servants need to be able to respond to people who are actually in need. The reality is that people who misuse these services should be fined accordingly.

Naysayer takes on GMO foodsJust like anyone who comes up with a new business idea, or a great invention, the creators of the Monsanto seed deserve to be paid for the time and effort they put into creating the seed. |
Should people running for public office turn down PERS?Here's an excerpt from Oregon Live on Ludlow turning down PERS: He says that he is the only candidate in the race "who will refuse to join the Public Employees Retirement System." Ludlow faces current Chairwoman Charlotte Lehan, county Commissioner Paul Savas, and state Rep. Dave Hunt. Is Ludlow the only candidate to make such a promise? Perhaps just as important a question: Are elected officials even able to decline joining the retirement system? I think Ludlow is in the right here. Perhaps this will encourage other candidates to follow suit.

Does a school really need an executive chef?"Certified Executive Chef through American Culinary Federation; High school diploma and five years of advanced management and culinary training in the specific job requirements; at least 8 years experience in commercial and/or institutional food service. The position requires thorough technical knowledge in nutrition, culinary arts and marketing. A “Serve Safe Sanitation” certificate and certification under the American School Food Service Certification plan." The job posting says this position pays $48,298 per year. We live in an age where teachers are being fired, special school programs and extra curricular activities are being cut, and schools are being closed left and right. This is just another example of wasteful spending by school districts that still don't get it.

Is it time to bring back plastic bags? Here is an excerpt from KGW on this story: A study published Wednesday in the Journal of Infectious Diseases details a girls' soccer team trip from Beaverton to Seattle in 2010. Less than 48 hours later, nine people were sicked by norovirus after they all ate cookies from the same reusable grocery bag. Two years ago, researchers at the University of Arizona found quantities of bacteria in reusable bags -- including E. coli." I think it might be time to start asking consumers if they want paper or plastic again. |
