Lars got his start in radio at age 16 spinning records (remember 45s?) and reading news, sports and weather (twice an hour) on KTIL (The Mighty 1590) from a little cinderblock building on the edge of a cow pasture in Tillamook, Oregon (75 miles West of Portland, Oregon).
36 years later, he’s only moved 75 miles east to Portland and light years to “the Right”. Emmy and Peabody award winner Lars Larson brings nearly four decades of experience as a radio and television journalist to the microphone for six hours of the best talk radio in America. Six hours of daily prep keep The Lars Larson Show on top of the news and top-of-mind for listeners across the country.
Along the way, Lars has worked for more than a dozen radio stations and five television stations. Today, Lars holds down the fort from 12pm – 4pm on Radio Northwest flagship FM NEWS 101 KXL. His local talk show airs on seventeen stations in the Pacific Northwest (and earns him the biggest local talk radio audience in the region).

It's Time For Oregon To Take A Page Out Of Arizona's PlaybookI know this isn’t likely in a state where the Governor just recently
announced that the state police will accept Mexican matriculár cards as
identification, nor where the state legislature hasn’t shown any inclination to
rid the state of illegals. This hurts
citizens of Oregon as illegals take the jobs that put Oregon in the top ranks
of national unemployment. It hurts kids
who go to schools crowded with the children of illegals. It hurts a worker’s comp system where even
illegal workers enjoy compensation when hurt on the job, even if they have no
legal right to work that job. And it
hurts in social services as illegals collect food stamps, subsidized housing,
and most expensively medical care. If
the taxpayers of Oregon continue to tolerate this, then they should not gripe
when there are not enough cops, courts, jails, schools and everything else they
might need. But the Supreme Court just
effectively gave states the go ahead to at least ask the question and jail
illegals.

Should Volunteer Firefighters Be Paid?Well, it's an issue that's come up locally. Here's an excerpt from the Statesman Journal about this situation: The U.S. Department of Labor has determined Marion County Fire District No. 1 and the Turner Fire Department need to pay back wages to volunteer firefighters who should have been paid as employees. The districts will divide more than $100,000 among 29 people: $83,400 from MCFD1 and $16,900 from Turner Fire. MCFD1 Chief Kevin Henson said news of the DOL determination has prompted calls from other agencies, wondering if they are in danger of similar action. “Since Wednesday night, I’ve gotten three or four calls from other fire chiefs,” Henson said. “They all want to know if they are doing the same thing.” Henson said the district had previously relied on a 2006 guidance letter from the labor department that said volunteers should be paid no more than 20 percent of total compensation received by full-time firefighters.
I had Chief Henson on the Northwest Show today, and he explained just how complicated this issue has become. |
Should There Be Any Limits On Campaign Donations? As part of his pledge, Hales said he wouldn't accept any donation over $600, would only accept money from Oregon donors and wouldn't self-fund.
Hales loaned himself $100,000 in the primary. He faces state Rep. Jefferson Smith in the general election. Smith, who raised less money than Hales in the primary, earlier called on his competitor to limit contributions. "Let's do this the Portland way," Hales said. This makes little, to no sense in my book. Why would a candidate want to limit the amount of money that his campaign can raise? Perhaps it's because he's not receiving that many contributions in the first place. Hales's competitor, Jefferson Smith, joined me today on the Northwest show, and I asked him if he would limit his contributions. |
Obama Is Involved In Next "Watergate"President Obama on Wednesday asserted executive privilege over documents sought by a House panel ahead of its vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. It's the first time Obama has used executive privilege since taking office. A White House aide said the president had gone longer without asserting the privilege in a congressional dispute than any other president in the last three decades. Are you kidding me? The same President who bashed George W. Bush for using executive privilege during his term, is now pulling out all the stops in an attempt to protect his friend Holder. The reality is that President Obama blocking these documents is illegal. He is using executive privilege without approval from congress. This has Watergate written all over it. I spoke with Jim Huffman, Dean Emeritus at Lewis and Clark Law School about what the President is doing, and the possible fallout. |
The Thugs At Terminal 6 Need To Be Stopped! For four weeks now, the thugs have been
jamming up a major transportation hub with illegal activities designed to
extort more work from their brothers in the electricians union. The result has been cargo that misses its
shipping date on cargo vessels, truckers caught in a mile long line at T-6, at
least a couple of auto accidents and real chaos. Companies in Oregon and Washington that
depend on deliveries to keep their workers on the job have been hurt. Some shippers have been forced to spend
hundreds of extra dollars to truck cargo to the Port of Tacoma. And now, a major shipping line has diverted a
ship from its planned stop in Portland, and is simply skipping that stop. Here's an excerpt from Oregon Live on the vessel that is skipping the rose city: Managers at Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's largest steamship lines, told freight forwarders Monday not to expect the 38,000-ton Cape Mayor in port this week. Instead the ship is expected to unload its Portland-bound containers in Oakland, Calif., where they'll be sent on by truck or rail. Another Hapag-Lloyd ship departed Portland late after calling on the Port of Portland last week -- as did a vessel owned by the Hanjin shipping line, which left about 100 empty containers at the terminal Monday to avoid further delays, port managers said. We know how far these long shore
jerks will go, after their hostage taking and dumping of cargo in Longview. And the only reason Kitzhaber tolerates this
nonsense, is that the unions own through their political contributions.

Fired For His Views On Global Warming? Dr. Nicolas Drapela Thinks So.But what if there was someone among the Oregon State chemistry staff that went against the grain? Someone who didn't buy in to the talk of global warming. Someone who was preaching that global warming was, in fact, not real. Well, it was happening at Oregon State, and it appears the powers at OSU didn't like it. Dr. Nicolas Drapela is an award-winning chemistry professor at OSU. He routinely has full classes, and those students routinely rate him a tough, but fair professor. But, unlike the bulk of the faculty at OSU, Drapela doesn't buy in to the global warming talk. In fact, he talks frequently about how global warming, in fact, does not exist. Recently, Dr. Drapela was informed that his contract at OSU, which runs out in September, would not be renewed. After meeting with his supervisor, as well as their supervisor, Drapela has yet to receive a reason for why the university has chosen not to renew his contract. He wasn't fired for budget reasons, scandal, or for any transgressions worthy of dismissal. Drapela believes that it is his views on global warming that may be behind this firing. Dr. Drapela joined me today on the show to talk about his situation. |
