I wonder about the priorities of the mainstream media
every day. This morning the big story is
that an NFL football player told a comic that Gay players aren’t welcome in the
locker room. Not really surprising, is
it? I’ll bet an anonymous poll of
straight players would find that they’re not any more enthusiastic about
welcoming a homosexual than the cheerleaders would be about showering with
linebackers. TV and radio is giving it a
lot of attention. At the same time…the
President’s choice for secretary of defense, Chuck Hagel, is undergoing
confirmation in the Senate. Hagel once complained about a new ambassador who
he said “was aggressively gay”. I’m willing to bet that none of the major media
raise that one at all. And which is more
significant…the comments of a football player or the man who’s about to take
over the most powerful military force on planet earth.

President Obama’s defense secretary rolls out new
political correctness for the United States Military today. Women in
combat. Yesterday, when the news first
broke, I got an earful from current service members and veterans. A few liked
it. But most of them pointed out the
practical problems. Women serve in the
military right now but the physical standards are set much lower than for men. That’s not a huge problem if the woman serves
in some jobs. But the men point out that a fully loaded combat infantry soldier
can tip the scales at 300 pounds. They
question if an average sized woman, similarly loaded up, can drag a wounded
brother to safety, or climb over a wall.
and these aren’t the objections of grizzled old Vietnam or world war two
vets. it’s the younger guys who have
respect for the women they serve with…but say that only women of extraordinary
physical fitness can meet the minimums set for men. While the women’s rights advocates are
celebrating today, I would only ask them…is it a victory if you win new
opportunities for women…only by setting telling those women they don’t have to
actually show they’re equal in ability?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in the hot seat this morning, testifying before the Senate about the incident
four months ago that led to the murders of four Americans, including the first
U.S. Ambassador killed in 30 years.
She’s already blown up once this morning as Senators question her about
why Americans were told a lie about a videotape, which led to spontaneous
protests that led to the deaths. That
whole story…told by the President, Clinton, Ambassador Susan Rice and the rest
of the Obama administration…was a lie and we know it now. But the President was in the middle of a
tight re-election campaign. Now we know
that it was a terrorist attack. Now we
know that the state department had months of warnings about the threats to the
embassy in Libya. And now…after hearing
months of excuses about why Hillary can’t testify…travel, the flu, dehydration,
bump on the head, clot on the brain, dog ate my homework. Clinton is anxious to leave the state
department behind and start running for President…she has 4 dead Americans in
her rear view mirror that she just can’t seem to shake.

Today, Americans turn their gaze to Washington D.C.
for the inauguration of a President. But
for me, the far greater expression of American rights and freedoms happened on
Saturday. Thousands of people gathered
on the steps of the state capitol in Salem…and in all fifty state capitols around
America. They exercised their rights to
freedom of assembly, their right to petition the government for redress of
grievances and their freedom of speech.
And all of that was in support of another right, the individual right to
bear arms, contained in the constitution and reaffirmed by the Supreme Court. We’ve heard a lot about that right in the
past six weeks because of the collision of two major events. The first of course was the murder of school
children in Connecticut. And the second
is the efforts of one American to abridge those rights. The irony is that the man being sworn in to a
second term of office as president…is the one that threatens the rights of
those who gathered in Salem on Saturday.
It was a pleasure to be invited to speak to that group…and especially
gratifying to see that the group behaved itself perfectly…no adverse events…no
trash left behind…and the lone counter protestor at the event was treated respectfully. God Bless America.

To a lot of Oregonians, he’s Governor John
Kitzhaber. He signs himself MD although
I understand his medical license is not current. But I always think of him as Dr. Death, since
he keeps coming up with killer ideas for his state. Like Doctor Assisted
Suicide. Now he has another one that’s
guaranteed to end in the murderous, painful death of innocent citizens. Strangely enough Kitzhaber doesn't believe in
the Death Penalty. So he has refused to
enforce the laws on the books that require the execution of convicted
killers. The doc apparently thinks his
personal feelings trump state laws passed not once, but twice by Oregon
voters. And Now Kitzhaber wants the
legislature to get rid of the death penalty altogether. My friend, district attorney Josh Marquis,
one of this country’s acknowledged experts on the death penalty points out that
the best criminal research on hand, says every time you execute a killer, you
save the lives of at least people who would have been murdered. The death penalty deters. The studies also say each dead bad guy could
save as many as 20 murders. But when it
comes to a choice of saving lives…or saving the lives of killers and the
governor’s feelings…we know which one is more important…don’t we?

If you care about your rights and liberties,
this President should scare you to death.
He claims to be a constitutional scholar, yet he famously described it
as a document of negative liberties. The
only thing negative about it is that it tells the government what it CANT do to
citizens. This is a President who believes that government can force citizens
into things like health care, over their objections and punish them if they
don’t comply. And today, the President
plans to announce restrictions on rights protected by the 2nd
amendment to the constitution. Now the
constitution assumes that CONGRESS will write laws that set the limits on the
time, place and manner of constitutional freedoms…stop you from shouting fire
in a crowded theater, for example. But
this President says he doesn't need Congress…because the people’s
representatives refuse to pass the laws he demands. So he’s going to use executive orders…like
the edicts of a dictator…to usurp the rights of the citizens he supposedly serves. This President swore an oath to uphold and
defend the Constitution…and he and his family are protected by guns…but he
wants to deny that protection to you and me.
I hope that Texas congressman makes good on his promise to introduce
articles of impeachment when Barack Obama crosses that constitutional line,
today.
