THE LARS LARSON SHOW                         Honestly Provocative.

Lars LarsonLars got his start in radio at age 16 spinning records (remember 45s?) and reading news, sports and weather (twice an hour) on KTIL (The Mighty 1590) from a little cinderblock building on the edge of a cow pasture in Tillamook, Oregon (75 miles West of Portland, Oregon).

36 years later, he’s only moved 75 miles east to Portland and light years to “the Right”. Emmy and Peabody award winner Lars Larson brings nearly four decades of experience as a radio and television journalist to the microphone for six hours of the best talk radio in America. Six hours of daily prep keep The Lars Larson Show on top of the news and top-of-mind for listeners across the country.

Along the way, Lars has worked for more than a dozen radio stations and five television stations. Today, Lars holds down the fort from 12pm – 4pm on Radio Northwest flagship FM NEWS 101 KXL. His local talk show airs on seventeen stations in the Pacific Northwest (and earns him the biggest local talk radio audience in the region).

Feds Fund Study For Fat Females

We talk a lot about the government wasting taxpayer dollars, and even after the sequester there are examples of government waste all around us. Here are a few examples:

- The White House has three calligraphers on staff, making a combined $277,000 per year.
- The handler for the Obama's dog Bo brings in a cool $100,000 per year
- TSA has a uniform allowance of $1,000 per employee
- The President recently spent a golf weekend in Florida that cost enough to save 341 furloughed federal workers.

Now the latest example of government waste: a federally funded study to find out why lesbians are fat!

Here's the scoop from our friends at the Daily Caller:

A Harvard-affiliated hospital will study why so many lesbians are overweight, thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the federal government.

The grant was recently approved by the National Institutes of Health. It will allow Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a medical center affiliated with Harvard University, to examine an issue of “high public-health significance,” in the words of researchers.

Three quarters of gay women are obese, according to the grant for the study. But gay men have much lower obesity rates than heterosexual men—a discrepancy for which there is no scientific explanation, said researchers.

An NIH spokesperson claimed that the study would be in the best interests of public health.

“The study is examining reasons why the risk of obesity varies according to sexual orientation, in order to inform the development of future strategies to prevent obesity,” said NIH spokesperson Robert Bock, in a statement to CNS News.

The study could take as long as five years. But funding could run out before then, depending on how Congress decides to balance federal spending in the wake of the March 1st sequester.

Is this really something that needs to be studied when we're not able to do things like pay for our military servicemen and women to go to college?

I don't think so...

13-Hours...And It Was All Worth It.

Rand Paul, fresh off his 13-hour, marathon filibuster, took some time to join me today for a 9 minute mini-filibuster.

He said that the filibuster was necessary to get the answers he needed from John Brennan regarding the use of drones on American citizens on American soil. Prior to the filibuster, Brennan seemed to basically avoid the question all together.

The basic point Senator Paul was trying to make is that you can't kill an American unless they are engaged in combat, without due process.

Crime Train Vs. Clackamas County

It looks like the fight between Clackamas County and Trimet is finally coming to blows. Trimet has officially filed suit against Clackamas County in an attempt to force the county to follow through on their original commitment to the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail.

Here's more from Oregon Live:

The transportation agency says the county has delayed final project property acquisitions and $1.3 million in road and signal improvements, and that this could impede the project. TriMet claims that the county is breaking its contracts with TriMet by not letting construction of the line continue as previously agreed.

In a press release announcing the lawsuit, TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said that since the November election, the county's cooperation on the project "has dissolved."

The lawsuit contends that a Clackamas County ballot measure that calls for a public vote before the county spends money on rail projects does not apply to the Portland-Milwaukie light rail because the county's commitment preceded the November passage of Measure 3-401.

"We understand that Clackamas County voters want a say in any rail projects based on Measure 3-401, but that does not affect the current Portland-Milwaukie project," Fetsch said. "Unfortunately, we have to take this action to prevent delays that could impact the overall cost and schedule of the Project."

The lawsuit says the county was supposed to transfer all necessary property to TriMet by Dec. 6, 2012, but still has not done so. TriMet also asks that a judge declare that the county must follow through on its contracts.

"Our focus is to keep the project on time, on budget and create jobs as we build a more efficient transit system," Fetsch said.

Trimet throws the word budget around like it matters. The gold plated crime train is being built at a cost of $250 million per mile, an amount that Trimet will never get back. The build out seems pretty ridiculous considering we found out just a few weeks ago that Trimet may be forced to reduce their service by as much as 20 percent in just seven years!

Now it looks like the county may be on the hook for this billion dollar boondoggle, whether they want it or not.

Mary Ann is Ann-gry

There has been a heated debate on the use of drones by the U.S. government, and whether they should be allowed to to use them on U.S. soil in extenuating circumstances. A good portion of you have said that you should never be able to kill any American without due process. I think it should be allowed, and here's why:

There are examples all around you where the government or law enforcement do things of this nature, but I'll just use one. If a cop see someone who is an imminent threat and sees no other way to neutralize the situation, that cop may take out his gun and shoot and kill the suspect. No due process, and, in most cases, the majority of Americans have no issue with this.

I got a call all the way from Ohio from a young lady named Mary Ann. She felt that I was in the wrong on drones, and tried to set me straight. How did she do?

Even If You're A Terrorist...You Still Get PERS!

It's one of those things that blows your mind when you hear it.

A waste water operator who works for the City of Portland has been arrested and accused of helping terrorists. Reaz Qadir Khan was arrested at his home on Tuesday and accused of sending money and advice to a terrorist involved in a suicide attack in Pakistan in 2009 that killed 30 people and injured another 300. He was born in Pakistan but is a naturalized U.S. citizen. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

As a public employee, he would be eligible for the PERS that comes along with that. But what if he is found guilty? Common sense would dictate that, if convicted of something like terrorism, this person would no longer qualify for their pension.

We called PERS and were shocked to find out that, even if convicted, he would STILL GET HIS PERS PENSION! Their logic: He paid into it, so he deserves it.

Only in Portlandia...

Chavez Finally Reaches Room Temperature

We learned today of the passing of Hugo Chavez. I think the world will be better for it, but what effect will it have?

We spoke with Dr. Vanessa Neumann, Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and Hugo Chavez expert, and she says his passing is very significant. She also talked about what the U.S. should do in reaction to his passing.
