Two dead after car plunges into river

Two men were found dead inside a car that plunged into the Pudding River on Monday afternoon, deputies said.

A dive team was called to search the car, which was found damaged and completely underwater. It was then pulled from the river.

Marion County deputies said there is evidence the 1990 Honda Civic left the road near the 11200 block of Mt. Angel-Gervais Road.

The victims were in their 20s, sheriff's deputies said, but their identities are being withheld until relatives are notified. The pair wore seat belts prior to the crash but it's not known whether they died from impact or from drowning.

Tom Pranger, who lives in the area, said he witnessed the car speeding before the crash.

"That car shifted into its highest gear just as it went past my driveway and never let up a bit," Pranger said. "I told myself, 'It's going to crash someplace.'"

Pranger said the car blew past his house at a remarkable speed.

"Probably well in excess of 100 mph," Pranger said. "And there was no way it was going to make the curves down there unless you know this road by heart."

A traffic reconstruction team worked into the night to investigate how the crash occurred.

Part of Mt. Angel-Gervais Road was closed during the investigation.
