High School may soon be starting a little later in Lawrence, Kansas…..because teenagers need more sleep. Should Oregon follow suit?
School Board member Rick Ingram researched the need for more sleep and proposed starting 25 minutes later than normal. He says he’d rather it start even later like 10am…but said 830 was more DOABLE. His research found that it improves academic performance, attendance and graduation rates. It REDUCES tardiness, teen vehicle accident rates and sports injuries. Som board members don’t like it….they say starting later means ending later and that could conflict with parent work schedules, or afternoon athletic events or student employment.
PLUS— It’s not cheap. It’s estimated that the change will add $100,000 per year to district transportation costs.
What do you think? Should school start later for teenagers?
