PORTLAND, Ore. — The suspect in a shooting that left a man injured Sunday morning in Northwest Portland is still at large.

The victim was taken to a Portland hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

Police said the victim and the suspect know each other. The suspect is described as a white male in his 40s and according to police, he has left the area.

Portland officers responded to a reported shooting at 7:17 a.m. Sunday at Northwest Tower Apartments at 335 Northwest 19th Avenue, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Neighbors told KGW reporter Maggie Vespa that the shooting happened on the fifth floor of the apartment building.

Northwest Tower is operated by HomeForward.

The non-profit’s website describes the complex as “a 13-story project-based Section 8 apartment community with 150 studio and one-bedroom homes, including six that have physical accommodations for accessibility.  The community has a waiting list preference for seniors and persons with disabilities.”

Thomas O’Cane, a disabled veteran, has lived in the building for eight years and said, in the last year, violence and drug use have increased dramatically.

He added he’s made a routine of contacting the building’s management and Portland police.

“I’m not afraid of these people. They’re criminals, and I will confront them, and I will fight them,” he said. “This is my home.”

Anyone with information about the shooting should call Portland Police Detective Tony Harris at 503-823-0768.
