Terry Stotts was named the 14th coach of the Portland Trail Blazers back in August, and since taking over, he has the team (12-12) and just on the outside of the playoffs with a bench that is amongst the worst in the NBA.  He joined Chad on Flight 750 Friday to discuss the season and talk about the coaching philosophies he has learned along the way.

As a former assistant to Rick Carlisle and George Karl, Stotts talked about some of the key coaching advice he has gotten from his previous coaches.

“Both George and Rick are tremendous coaches, but their approach to their style of coaching is very different…Rick is very much an attention to detail kind of guy, George is kind of a nebulous kind of guy…One of the things I’ve learned from both of them is you have your fundamental beliefs, you have to be true to yourself, but at the same time, be flexible to adapt to your team.”

Stotts insists that the ability to adapt is one of the biggest reasons he has gotten the Blazers to a .500 record.

“For our team, there’s not a statistic that, if we do this, we’ll win the game…If you play the game the right way, I think that formula has proven to work no matter what team you are.”

Stotts also discussed the play of his young point guard, Damian Lillard.

“I knew he was special.  Certainly the thing that everybody saw was his poise, his talent, his maturity… He’s learning and I think how he has adapted already in this amount of time is probably the thing that I have been most impressed with.

Take a listen to the interview with Stotts and be sure to tune into 750thegame for any breaking developments with the Blazers.
