Gormiley led to jail in handcuffs

Nick Baker

December 11, 2012, 2:15 pm

A mother of three pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the death of 23-year-old Nick Baker last November.  Through a plea deal, Samantha Gormiley, also 23, was sentenced to two years behind bars today in a Washington County courtroom.

Gormiley was high on methadone, trying to get over her addiction to pain killers.  She was going near 70 m.p.h when she crashed into Baker as he jaywalked in a crosswalk near Canyon Road and SW Watson Avenue in Beaverton.  He was headed to work in downtown Portland as the manager of a Subway restaurant.

Gormiley apologized to Baker's family while breaking down.  "Every time I look at my children, I think about Nicklas."  His mother wished that apology would've come sooner.

In addition to her time in prison, the judge ordered Gormiley to pay more than $10,000 in restitution and she'll be on supervision for three years after her jail release.
