Marijuana is Legal in Washington State

The law which voters passed last month making marijuana legal in Washington took effect today. It is legal to possess up to one ounce.
Many users posed for the occasion taking pictures of them in act, even though it's illegal to smoke pot in public. You still can't grow or sell it without breaking federal laws. The state's medical marijuana law is not affected by the new law. It also does not protect workers from their company's drug laws.
The law has encouraged people from neighboring Oregon to drive across the river. Officials don't plan to crack down on people crossing state lines, much like fireworks enforcement, but they discourage people from coming to Washington to get marijuana.
Police only plan to issue warnings to violators for now. Once they do start enforcing the law, it will be a $50 fine.
Washington and Colorado became the first states to decriminalize and regulate the recreational use of marijuana.
