Civil War Week is Here on 750 The Game

The Oregon Ducks have had football players move on to the professional ranks of the NFL with varying degrees of success. One player who achieved the highest accolades, Mel Renfro joined John Canzano on The Bald Faced Truth to talk about his career and Civil War week.

The Ducks head into the Civil War rivalry game with Oregon State a little wounded after their loss to Stanford. Mel talked about the loss with John Canzano.

"I was just anticipating and waiting for them to burst out of it, I just said any minute now they're gonna take off and hated to see them lose but their resilient I think they'll bounce back."

Mel Renfro will always be remembered as one of the most legendary Oregon Ducks to every play football at the school. He almost became a Beaver however, Mel and John chatted about it.

"I was headed to Oregon State, my parents were convinced by either Len Casanova or Bill Bowerman that I should go to Oregon and my dad said you're not going to Oregon State you're going to Oregon so when it was time they loaded me in a car and took me down to Eugene."

Mel and John also talked about the Cowboys and touched on Jerry Jones also being the team's GM and Mel's high school football career in which he was a teammate of Terry Baker's.

One football player from the state of Oregon has won the Heisman Trophy. His name is Terry Baker and he joined John Canzano on The Bald Faced Truth to talk about winning the trophy and Civil War week.

The Civil War isn't the only big story here in the Northwest in regards to college football. The Heisman Trophy race is also heating up and Terry spoke with John and gave his thoughts on the battle.

"It's not who gets out of the gate the fastest it's who finishes at the finish line at front. These last couple of games are just very important of how these candidates finish, they can fade in a hurry, a injury can do it a couple of bad games will do it and you just hold your breath."

Terry and John talked about what the Civil War meant to the players and the fans.

"They were a lot like any other game, maybe a little bigger being the last game of the season and all that but I've never had this deep felt hate for Oregon that some Beavers do. Some of the kids I played high school football with and good friends of mine were playing for Oregon the very time I was playing against them."

Terry and John also spoke about the rivalry between the Beavers and Huskies and how recruiting has changed in college football over the years.

The Oregon Ducks lost Saturday to Stanford creating a must see "Civil War" matchup with the Oregon State Beavers this coming Saturday in Corvallis. Oregon State Beavers RB Terron Ward joined John Canzano on The Bald Faced Truth to talk about the upcoming rivalry game.

Ward who rushed for over a hundred yards last weekend against Cal spoke with John about getting an opportunity to run against the Ducks defense.

"We want to establish the run and open up the pass and make it easy for our lineman on pass plays but yeah, we want to establish the run and we take the challenge head on with the Ducks."

Saturday was a rough day for the Oregon Ducks as they lost a hard-fought battle to the Stanford Cardinal in overtime at Autzen Stadium.  Adam Jude, Oregon Ducks beat writer for The Oregonian, joined Chad on Flight 750 Monday to breakdown the game and to preview which Bowl game the Ducks are most likely headed to after the loss.

Jude talked about the controversial decision by Chip Kelly to go for it on fourth down, early in the first quarter, rather than taking the almost automatic points when it seemed pretty clear that the Ducks and Cardinal were going to be in for a dogfight. 

Jude insists that he wasn’t really surprised that they decided to go for it on fourth down.

“Chip Kelly goes for it in situations that most coaches wouldn’t…He would rather rip all his hair out most times than try for a field goal in any situation.”

Warren Spady knows all about the trophy that was once awarded to the winner of the Civil War – he created it, after all. On Monday, he joined the BFT to talk about the journey of his creation throughout history.

Spady sculpted the trophy in 1959 while a student at the University of Oregon. According to Spady, two student officials – one from Oregon and one from Oregon State – came up with the idea for the Platypus Trophy. Together, they also decided that a student at Oregon should craft the trophy, because they had the only advanced sculpture program between the two schools.

After the trophy was made, it was awarded to the winner of the Civil War for three years from 1959 to 1961 before being lost – seemingly forever. Years later, Spady said he saw the trophy again in 1985 in a Leighton Pool trophy case after it was repurposed as the Civil War water polo trophy. However, when the Leighton Pool facility was demolished, the trophy appeared to have been lost again.

Both Oregon and Oregon State have gone through challenging times with their respective football programs. The "Civil War" rivalry game is steeped in tradition and will always be a big game between the two rival programs no matter the records heading into the matchup.

Former Oregon State head coach Jerry Pettibone who saw his fair share of losing seasons in Corvallis joined BFT guest host Fletcher Johnson to talk about his time in Eugene and the "Civil War" game.

Fletcher and Jerry talked about life after coaching and how Jerry utilizes his time running a business that evaluates high school football players as they get ready to move on to the next level in the college ranks.

John Robinson has been a successful football coach for many years, but before he coached football he played for the Oregon Ducks on the 1958 team that went to the Rose Bowl. On Tuesday, Robinson joined BFT guest host Fletcher Johnson to reflect on both his playing and coaching career.

When asked about what he remembers most from his playing days, Robinson quickly recalled his coach, Len Casanova. The passing of Robinson’s father during his freshman year caused him to turn to Casanova as a father figure, and it was a role that Casanova seemed ready to accept.

“[He] treated me like a son,” said Robinson. “But I think he saw all his players as human beings and people he could help. All the guys that played there loved him.”

But even before he played college football Robinson knew that he wanted to eventually become a coach, and he shared that dream with a high school friend who would become a Hall-of-Famer in his own right.

“John Madden and I grew up together, and started talking about being coaches [in high school],” said Robinson. “We were going to be the greatest players that ever lived, but we found out early in life that wasn’t going to happen. So, we both segued it into the idea of becoming coaches.”

When people think of Thanksgiving there are usually a few things that come to mind…food, travel, and of course football.  And for college football fans, there is no better weekend than Thanksgiving weekend as it marks the always crazy rivalry week.

On Saturday, Oregon and Oregon State will face off in the 116th Civil War in Corvallis, and with Oregon’s loss to Stanford over the weekend, this marks one of the most anticipated matchups the state has ever seen.  Both the voice of the Ducks, Jerry Allen, and the voice of the Beavers, Mike Parker, joined Chad on Flight 750 Tuesday to preview the great battle.

Allen insists that this game means a lot for both teams and it means a lot for the conference as well.

“It’s great for the Pac-12 when the nation is watching this game because it means something to both teams.”

The "Civil War" football game between Oregon and Oregon State is rich in history where the participants hold the memories close to their heart. Former Ducks WR Samie Parker joined BFT guest host Fletcher Johnson to share those "Civil War" memories.

The Ducks have other rivals within the Pac-12 other than Oregon State. Fletcher and Samie talked about whether or not any of the other rival games were bigger than the "Civil War" match-up.

"Oregon State was always the biggest rivalry we always played against, we just wanted to go out there and take care of business each and every time we played those guys."

The "Civil War" rivalry game between Oregon and Oregon State leaves many memories with the players that participated. Samie talks about one of the biggest memories that still sticks with him to this very day.
The big "Civil War" football game between Oregon and Oregon State takes place this coming up weekend and there's nobody better to give perspective on the showdown than a former player. Former Beavers DB Al Afalava joined BFT guest host Fletcher Johnson to talk about his "Civil War" memories and his career as a member of the Tennessee Titans.

Players that make the transition from college to NFL still carry the pride of the college football team with them. Al talked about whether or not he talks about the Beavers in the locker room in Tennessee.

"Every week the Beavers win I come in and brag about it and wear our gear and we'll have our friendly bets here and there."

The NFL has an age old tradition of playing football on Thanksgiving. Fletcher asks Al if he would rather be playing or watching football on Thanksgiving.

"I think I would rather watch the games on the coach and you get to relax and eat all day and watch football all day."

The "Civil War" is the biggest rivalry game for Pac-12 football teams Oregon and Oregon State. Nobody knows this rivalry game as much as Beavers head coach Mike Riley. Coach Riley joined Bald Faced Truth guest host Fletcher Johnson for a holiday segment.

The "Civil War" has always garnered a lot of attention locally and Coach Riley and Fletcher talked about the rivalry game getting national attention as both teams are bowl bound.

"The neatest thing that has happened is this game has taken on national ramifications you know Oregon played us a couple of years ago to get to their final job done before they played in the national championship game and then we played twice before that to go to the Rose Bowl so they've been big big games anyway."

The Oregon offense is high powered and lead by freshman QB Marcus Mariota. Coach Riley gave his thoughts on the young QB from Hawaii.

"He's really a good player, a great athlete a great passer. I don't know which I hate worse when he's throwing it or running it himself it's a tough deal."
