Over one million people take their own lives each year worldwide.  In Oregon, 678 committed suicide in 2010, and the numbers for 2011 are expected to be about the same.

The unemployed, mentally ill, and veterans returning from duty are the most vulnerable.

One in five suicides is that of a veteran.  They have difficulty readjusting to civilian life and often times suffer from PTSD, turning to drugs and alcohol to help cope.  They find relationships have deteriorated, and there's also great difficulty in finding work.

Portland recently spent $150,000 on suicide prevention efforts.  There are many resources for those contemplating suicide.
