After a (2-1) start to the season the Blazers have dropped to (2-4) and tonight they face and Atlanta Hawks team that has already beaten two of the better teams in the NBA in the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. Former Duck and current Trail Blazers TV analyst Orlando Williams joined Chad on Flight 750 Monday to talk about the Blazers and what they need to do differently if they have any intentions of making the playoffs this season.
The biggest problem so far for the Blazers has been its Bench. Williams says that that is the biggest thing that must improve over this season.“Guys coming off the bench must step up. Someone needs to answer the bell. These guys are pros. They know what it takes. They know what they need to do to compete.”
One of the other big problems for the Blazers has been the less-than-stellar play LaMarcus this season. Williams explains that a lot of that probably has to do with his preseason preparation.
“Often times with All-Stars, they pretty much take the preseason off, and then they try to get the motor running at a full click…With a lot of new players, a new point guard a new offense and a new coach, that may not have been the best strategy to get going. And now what we’re seeing from LaMarcus is it took him a little while to get the engine going.”
Williams suggests that there is one other are that is really lacking right now for the Blazers – the defense. Williams insists that there are a few things the Blazers really need to take care of in their defensive strategy. They need to understand who can shoot the three effectively and make sure to pressure those individuals better. They need to make sure that in the transition defense they get back rather than trying to stop the break up high. And they need to get more aggressive and let the opposing team get so many uncontested shots.
