This stretch of freeway was to be closed

The Oregon Department of Transportation has called off this weekend's planned closure of Interstate Five southbound for paving due to forecasted rain.  The freeway was to close from the Fremont to Marquam Bridge Friday at 11:00pm through 5:00am Monday.  Five weekend 54-hour closures are planned for this project.

The southbound work has been rescheduled for the next two weekends.  Two northbound closures are necessary as well.  ODOT will also close the stretch overnight on some weeknights to complete the project.

Drivers should be relieved after last weekend's traffic nightmare, partly blamed on poorly placed, inaccurate signs, or none at all.

The polymer concrete that crews are applying is very sensitive to moisture.  Rain could jeopardize its ability to bond properly and it needs 72 hours to dry.
