Milk Prices Could Rise

Dairy lovers and milk drinkers should be watching Congress closely this week. Lawmakers are scheduled to debate the farm bill. If it doesn't get renewed, the price of milk could skyrocket. One report
says a gallon of milk could cost $8. Stephanie Page with the Oregon Department of Agriculture
says that's because of an old law from the 1940's. It will go into effect if the farm bill isn't renewed. Page says the old law requires the USDA to buy massive amounts of dairy. Doing that would restrict the supply and send prices skyrocketing. She says dairy farmers want a farm bill that includes a safety net included for dairy producers.
Dairy supports aren't the only issue in the farm bill. Lawmakers have been butting heads over the SNAP program, or food stamps. Congress is scheduled to debate the farm bill this week.
