Chael Sonnen is best known as one of the greatest MMA fighters on the planet but he has also spent a significant amount of time in the Jungle with Jim Rome. And he owns the prestigious title of Smack off champ 2012. He joined Chad on Flight 750 Wednesday to talk about his MMA career and his smack off crown.Sonnen insists that the smack off was one of his favorite things that he has ever taken part in.
“I thought it was fun. You know I love the smack off and the smack off is very hard. I don’t know if you’ve been following or heard it this year, but I did not successfully defend my crown. It was a lot of fun though and the level of competition is greatly up. Everybody stepped up their game and I can tell you for 2014, I will be more prepared than ever as I’m sure the rest of them will too.”
Sonnen also talked a little bit about his upcoming fight with Rashaad Evans. He says that he and Evans have very similar fighting styles.
“I think fighting Rashaad is a lot like looking in the mirror. He likes to do what I like to do. We both come from a college wrestling background and learned everything off of that base. So I think we are very similar – similar in age, size, height, the whole bit. It’s going to be a tough night.”
Sonnen is also a University of Oregon grad and he talked about what it was like when he learned that the school was cutting its wrestling program.
"Well it was too bad. You know we had very poor leadership down there and the writing was on the wall for a significant period. And as alumni and fans and leaders in the wrestling community, we did the best we could to stop that. You could see that train wreck coming. I don’t know that the school had too much of a choice. They just really had to make some changes down there and I really regret that they did that."
Take a listen to the great interview and be sure to check him out this weekend down at Spirit Mountain Casino for the Battle at the Mountain.
