CAMAS, Wash. -- Vandals have made a mess of the Camas Cemetery
, toppling at least sixteen headstones in the old 'Pioneer' section. Some are cracked and broken.
"It's not a small crime. They all will need some kind of professional repair," said Sergeant Scot Boyles.
Police have a few leads on who's responsible, but nobody has been arrested. More than one person could be involved since some of the headstones weigh several hundred pounds.
The severity of the charges will be determined by the repair bill, which police say will be significant.
The Public Works Department
maintains the grounds and they're working on getting the headstones repaired. Some are in worse shape than others and it's unknown how long the restoration work will take.
The cemetery was plotted in 1885 and the city took over ownership in 2007.
