Portland, Oregon - New, hard numbers today about gunshot wounds and our kids. Researchers at OHSU hope their study will get this country wake up and do something about it.
They studied 50,000 9-1-1 calls. Calls involving gunshots didn't come in all that often. But when they did, one out of every five resulted in death. When the kid survived ,the injuries were more severe and expensive than any other injury such as from a car accident or fall.
The study says gunshot wounds are the leading cause of death and injuries for kids and teens in the US. . They are second only to car wrecks as a cause of death for teens between the ages of 15 and 19. Researchers hope the study gets people fired up about finding better ways to prevent these gunshot accidents from happening in the first place.
