PORTLAND -- Former City Commissioner Jim Francesconi has officially announced that he's running for Multnomah County Chairman. He plans to focus on schools, mental health and the court system.
Francesconi is an attorney and member of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education. He ran for public office in 2004, losing the Portland Mayoral race to Tom Potter.
"I know how to bring people together to move our community forward. We just can't continue to not address the most important issues facing not only the county, not only the region, but our country and that's the growing gap between rich and poor," said Francesconi.
The seat is currently occupied by Marissa Madrigal, the former chief of staff for Jeff Cogen who resigned
in September in light of an affair with a county co-worker.
Francesconi is expected to challenge current county commissioner Deborah Kafoury in May. Although she's yet to file for the race, Kafoury has said she'll run for chairman.
