Bobby Bell Helped Usher in Super Bowl Era

The Super Bowl in the early days featured the winners of both the AFL and NFL face off head to head. The AFL was still a relatively young league and was doing whatever possible to not only become a better established league but also gain the respect of the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs were an AFL powerhouse and helped establish respect in large part due to the efforts of Hall of Famer Bobby Bell. Bell joined the BFT and talked about his career and the early days of the Super Bowl.

Tickets to a current Super Bowl cost hundreds of dollars face value and often sell for much more through ticket brokers and scalpers. Bell spoke with John about the prices of the tickets in Super Bowl I and V.

"I remember looking at Buck (Buchanan) and I said Buck, who in the world is gonna pay $15 for a seat. I mean who is gonna pay $15 for a ticket that's what the biggest ticket was $15 and they had some for $7.50."

The Super Bowl has changed dramatically since Super Bowl I was played between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. Bell talked with John about how the game has changed.

"The magnitude of all the things that go on before the Super Bowl. I think the first year we were out there we didn't do anything hardly, nothing was done before the Super Bowl. Now they have the convention center and thousands of people coming from all over the world."

Bell and John also talk about segregation in the NFL and how the AFL changed the perception of black athletes and helped break down race barriers.
