DAMASCUS, Ore. -- The citizens of Damascus
will decide on November 5th whether to keep the town a city or turn it back to Clackamas County.
If the city is dis-incorporated, all city employees including police will be fired.
Homeowners would not get back their property taxes that have gone for the development of the city since 2004. Those dollars would merely be redistributed to other county departments.
The mayor is making a door-to-door effort talking with people about keeping the city as is.
"People want control of their destiny. I think this is the wrong time to dis-incorporate. Why give up the marathon a hundred yards before the finish line?," said Mayor Steve Spinnett.
If Damascus stays a city, he's sure that voters will be finally able to look at a pair of comprehensive plans next spring. The town's people are skeptical though, because not even one plan has been approved in almost nine years.
