Jefferson Smith Addresses 20-year-old Assault Case

Portland Mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith addressed reporters today to explain an assault incident from his college days at the University of Oregon.  A Willamette Week story detailed the event from his sophomore year.  He says he was at a party and there was a woman on a couch.  Someone pushed her off and she thought it was him.  Smith says she began attacking him, he tried to keep her away and ended up hurting her.  The case was settled out of court because Smith says he paid for her medical bills.

Smith has come under fire during this campaign for his poor driving record, missed court appearances, roughing up sports opponents, license suspensions and getting caught with alcohol while in high school.
