Timbers Don't Get Lost Among Stars

Heading into their latest match against the LA Galaxy, the Portland Timbers were riding a 12-game unbeaten streak and had yet to lose to the club from Los Angeles this season. Both of those streaks continued on Sunday, as recent trade acquisition Maximiliano Urruti scored the lone goal in a 1-0 Timbers victory over the Galaxy in front of a sellout crowd at JELD-WEN Field.
After a scoreless first half, Urruti scored the game's only goal (and his first in a Portland kit) in the 52nd minute off a corner kick from Will Johnson.
Sunday marked Urruti's second start for the Timbers since coming over from Toronto FC earlier this month in exchange for Bright Dike.
Los Angeles looked to have scored the equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time when Galaxy forward Robbie Keane headed a Landon Donovan free kick into the net, but the referee called Keane offside.
With the win, the Timbers gain three points in the Western Conference standings to hold on to third place with 49 points, while shrinking the gap between themselves and conference leader Real Salt Lake to just two points. The LA Galaxy now fall four points behind the Timbers with 45, and are winless in their last four league games.
The Timbers will next face the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday, October 6th in British Columbia for a Cascadia Cup showdown. Tune in to 750 The Game for the call, plus all your pre- and post-game coverage.
