SALEM, Ore. -- Protesters with Cascadia Forest Defenders scaled the Oregon State Capitol on Thursday morning and hung ropes and a sign from the dome in protest of logging on state forest lands.
The sign read "Kitzhaber's Legacy: Privatizing The Elliott Forest – Clearcutting For Profit".
The protesters planned to remain there until the end of business, but they came down around noon. Five people were arrested.
"We'd prefer to just work it out, but we've attempted that and it hasn't worked out in the past. So this is a great way to make sure that everybody in Oregon knows what's going on and that Kitzhaber knows that his name's gonna be attached", said the group's Jason Gonzales.
They entered the Capitol as a tour group before breaking away.
Public tours are now cancelled as security procedures are reviewed.
