PORTLAND -- It was a rude awakening for residents at Southeast 100th and Harold. Around 2:30 Thursday morning, a drunk driver who was speeding missed the corner.
The vehicle sheared off a power pole and smashed into five parked cars. One of those was pushed into the side of a house. Neighbors feel fortunate that nobody was hurt.
"You have to be very observant. There is an intersection here that's a bus route and it's also a school zone," said one man.
25-year-old Jeffrey Curran bolted from the scene, but police caught up with him and cuffed him for DUII among other charges.
A man died
when his vehicle hit a power pole just a half block down the street several months ago. Earlier this year, the
city put in a traffic median and crosswalk there to slow drivers, but neighbors say speeding is still a problem in the area.
"There's been accidents before and the power poles are taken out. People drive kinda crazy around here sometimes."
