What the signs looks like

With more suicides in Portland these days, the city wants those who are considering ending their lives to know what resources they have.

The signs direct people feeling suicidal to Lines for Life.  Officials say the suicide prevention hotline has a 98% success rate.  The numbers to call are 1-800-SUICIDE or (503) 972-3456 locally.

The first sign was posted today on the Vista Bridge, where several people jump to their deaths each year.  More signs near other bridges will be installed over the coming months.

The Portland City Council has committed $150,000 to the project.

Suicide calls have doubled since 2001.  The goal of the crisis line is to prevent people with a mental issue from calling 911.
