GOVERNMENT ISLAND -- A wildfire on the island in the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington is burning through grass and trees.
There have been several flare-ups and a large plume of smoke is visible from Interstate 205, Marine Drive and other streets in the area.
"The plume of cloud is probably over 600'. Well over an acre, probably two acres from my vantage point," listener Les tells KXL's Lars Larson.
The island was evacuated as the flames moved east from the Glen Jackson Bridge. The area is tough to access and firefighters can only get there by boat.
A caller on the river told us a camper tossed a cigarette and the island went up in flames. Another said it looked to have started by the water and raced up the hill.
Resources from Portland, Vancouver, Gresham and the Coast Guard were called in to assist with putting out the fire.
