New Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich joined John Canzano on the Bald Faced Truth Thursday afternoon to talk about the Duck's upcoming Pac-12 season.
When asked how running back De’Anthony Thomas would best serve the Ducks this year, Coach Helfrich said, “With the ball in his hands. The guy is so dynamic, we just need to get the ball in his hands.”
With a $68 million new practice facility, there is definitely a wow factor to potential recruits. However, Coach Helfrich says that athletic ability is no longer the only criteria in determining whether or not a player is right for Oregon.
“We have to be more selective than we’ve ever been of character. Are we getting the right character, the right attitude, or is this guy just totally into the uniforms or the hot tubs; [if he is,] that guy’s not for us.”
As for the character of current Oregon players, Coach Helfrich says that they have a role model leading the team in quarterback Marcus Mariotta. “He’s awesome. He’s been really good. He’s practicing really well, doing a really good job as a leader, we’re so excited to see him play this fall.”
As for the upcoming season, will Oregon begin to incorporate more of a passing game under Coach Helfrich than under former coach Chip Kelly?
“We want to score, and we want to move the ball. We’re more developed in our passing game, you could say, just because everybody has another year and we’re not having to limit anything in our game plan from our quarterback’s perspective.”
