Mark Beebout's mug shot

July 31, 2012, 11:59 am

Mark Beebout is accused of killing 32-year-old Nikayla Powell in her apartment at Southeast 14th and Belmont in Portland earlier this month.  They met in a homeless outreach program where Powell volunteered.

Beebout, 39, pleaded not guilty to murder, theft, credit card fraud, tampering with evidence and unauthorized use of a vehicle.  He's due back in court next Tuesday.

Neighbors called police reporting a foul odor.  Police found her decomposing body on July 10th.  Powell's family had not heard from her in a week.

Beebout is a convicted sex offender.  He was staying at Powell's apartment for a few days.  He was found in Seattle her with car, dog and credit cards.

Her friends are holding a vigil in her honor tonight at 6:00 at Laurelhurst Park.
