Supporters of same-sex marriage began a petition drive on Friday in Portland. The campaign kickoff was held at Waterfront Park.
More than 116,000 signatures are needed to put an initiative to legalize gay marriage on next November's ballot. Oregon United for Marriage
, the group behind the effort, has one year to get it done.
"More and more people are talking to their friends and family and neighbors, and they are coming to understand that gay and lesbian couples want to marry for similar reasons anyone else wants to marry for love and commitment," said spokesman Peter Zuckerman.
They say the time is right. Polls show that a majority of Oregonians would vote for gay marriage, but just slightly. Opponents believe they'll succeed and are already planning their campaign.
Voters approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between a man and woman ten years ago.
