Portland Police Using License Plate Reader Cams

The Portland Police Bureau has taken some more time to explain why they are using Automatic License Plate Reader technology on 16 of their newest patrol cars. The cameras capture and store license plate numbers on vehicles for four years.
Sergeant Pete Simpson says it is not their intention to collect information on the public, but says the system is critical; responsible for recovering 30% of stolen cars. Simpson says they have listened to the ACLU's concerns and have crafted portions of their policy about using the cameras at public, religious and political events.
