My First Backyard Egg
This weekend I celebrated the first egg laid by my backyard chickens. Yes, I have two chickens, but only one egg, so it's unclear which hen is more mature. At any rate, it was very exciting after months of anticipation. Backyard farming is becoming more and more popular in the northwest, in fact Portland is number one in the country for the most residential chickens. Also, more and more homebuyers are looking for houses with room for chickens. You can read more about the study here
, and also how people in Seattle are dealing with their chicken boom.
I got my chickens a few months ago but spent a long time preparing. I patched all the holes in the fence, bought a coop, even took a "chicken class'' at Portland Nursery. When it came time to buy the birds, Craigslist was full of ads from people selling, I had no problem there. I also have no problem getting food and other supplies as the feed store is just blocks from my house! I think the only problem I will have is too many eggs!
Do you have chickens? What has been your experience? Any other animals you live with that makes your city house more like a farm?-Lacey
