The Language Access Team at Salem Hospital recently received recognition from the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters. It's the first team in Oregon to achieve certification. Supervisor Samuel Pino says his staff speaks Spanish and Russian. He contracts with another service to provide interpreters for other languages. He can see up to four patients an hour. Some appointments take five minutes, others take much longer, depending on what kind of information needs to be interpreted. He says in a part of the state where 25% of residents don't speak English at home, the service is crucial.| Add your comments below | |
